Aimset

Aimset is a platform designed to help early-career product professionals—such as UX researchers and designers, developers, and product managers—gain hands-on experience by contributing to social good projects. The platform allows users to post projects, volunteer for projects, and collaborate with others, all while developing practical skills and building their professional portfolios.

As a Product Designer, I joined the team after the problem discovery phase. My role was to refine the information architecture (IA), define user flows, and help ensure the usability of core features such as the project dashboard, project creation, project applications, and messaging.

Stakeholder Interviews & User Surveys

Before I joined the team, the initial research phase had already been completed, with user interviews and surveys conducted to understand the pain points of early-career product professionals. Key challenges faced identified included:

💡 Early-Career Product Professionals Struggle to Gain Experience

Many early-career product people struggle to find opportunities to apply their skills in real-world settings which is a necessity when applying to jobs nowadayds.

💡 Limited access to mentoring

There’s a significant gap in available mentorship for early-career professionals, hindering growth and development.

💡 Interest in social good

Many early-career professionals want to contribute to projects that create a positive impact but have trouble finding relevant opportunities.

🎯The Problem

" Early-career product professionals often struggle to find opportunities to gain hands-on experience and showcase their skills, especially in meaningful projects that contribute to social good. They also lack access to structured mentorship and collaborative environments. "

Competitor Analysis

To understand the competitive landscape, I analyzed other platforms offering similar services (like mentoring, hands-on projects, social-good projects and team collaboration) for early career product professionals or volunteer opportunities. This helped us identify gaps and differentiate Aimset:

Define

User Requirement Prioritisation

I led the user requirement prioritization for Aimset’s MVP using the Impact-Effort Matrix, working closely with the team to evaluate each feature’s value and feasibility. Through collaborative discussions, we categorized features into Quick Wins, Major Projects, Fill-Ins, and Time Wasters, prioritizing high-impact, low-effort features. This approach ensured that we focused on delivering the most valuable features with minimal resources, while involving the team to align on priorities and goals.

🟢 High Priority (Quick Wins):
  • Onboarding (Sign-up):
Essential for users to start using the platform.

Critical for returning users to access their account and platform features.

  • Create Project
Core feature for project creators to initiate social good initiatives.

  • Messaging Feature
Facilitates communication between project creators and volunteers, improving user engagement.

  • Project Details Page
Essential for volunteers to understand project details before applying.

  • Applications History
Important for users to track their application status but can be added after the main features are live.

  • Project Listing (Dashboard)
Vital for volunteers to browse and filter available projects based on interests, skills, and tags.

🟢 Low Priority (Fill-Ins):
  • Public User Profile View
Useful for networking but not as essential for the core platform functionality.

User Persona creation

I created user personas to better understand the needs, goals, and pain points of our target users—early-career professionals seeking to gain practical experience through social good projects. By developing these personas, I was able to align the team around a shared understanding of our primary users, ensuring we stayed focused on solving their core problems throughout the design and development process.

I used insights from initial user research, including surveys and interviews, to identify patterns in user behaviors and motivations.

Design

Information Architecture

I created the Information Architecture (IA) to clearly map and organize the prioritized features for the MVP, focusing on key user requirements such as project creation, volunteer applications, and messaging. The team brainstormed to determine the necessary forms and input data, grouping related features and information together.

User flows

I developed user flows that detailed the process for core tasks on the platform along with the design team, such as:

  • Creating a project

  • Applying to a project

  • Tracking applications & messaging volunteer or project publisher
